Time Management Tips for Women – Making Time for Work, Family and Friends
Years ago when I worked at a technology consulting firm in the mid-80s, I learned some hard-earned lessons in time management. It’s an exciting time for me and the industry because of the lightning-fast advancements in technology. Our mid-sized organization is growing rapidly and I recently took on the role of HR Director. It was a newly created role for the company and boy was I excited. However, my flow-with-the-flow natural tendency is challenged by the rigors and demands of my schedule.
I was traveling extensively to top universities, looking for super-smart talent, all the while, training all new employees, developing HR systems, raising two young children, and going to school at night. Yes, I was in over my head. Well one day the owner sat in my office, (he could see my projects piling up) and asked me to write down what I was doing in 30 minute increments. Can you imagine that! I am totally humiliated! That was a moment I will never forget, because I realized that I had never been taught to manage my time effectively.
Flash forward to 2011, I’m now a work-from-home entrepreneur running an internet marketing agency and style coaching business. And things can’t be tougher to stay on task and produce projects (like this newsletter) on time.
When I see pictures of moms holding their kids at the computer, I shake my head sadly. That picture has more emphasis on unproductive people than you can imagine! There was a time when I was one of them, but not anymore. Let me share with you top time management tips from some of the most successful people I know.
1) Completely clear clutter from your workplace. Nothing causes more mental stress than seeing piles and mounds of half-finished projects. Immediately clear them and notice the immediate peace that overtakes your soul.
2) Work in solitude free from distractions. No TV, no music, no surfing the net, if you are serious about working from home, you won’t make any excuses to achieve the success you desire. Now this was tough for me, because I love me some good music! Don’t get me wrong, I still crank out music, but don’t focus on finishing a project.
3) Don’t answer your phone. If you’re like me and have kids, put the phone on silent and look at it every 15-30 minutes to see if you missed their call, no one else. Kids love to text—so use that tool to stay connected. I’m especially confused by parents who don’t like texting with their kids. How can they and you stay on task by engaging in distracting phone conversations throughout the day?
4) Choose a time of day to respond to the email. We live in an email overload society with stuff you signed up to receive and loads of other cryptic emails showing up in your inbox. No matter what email account you use, most offer sophisticated tools to help you sort and prioritize your emails. Don’t react randomly throughout the day or you’ll lose precious moments of staying focused and on task to complete the task you really need to focus on.
5) Block out time for projects in 30-minute increments—then take some time off. It’s important to know where your time is going and what you’re doing so you can adjust to stay on track. If you’re like me, you’ll be managing multiple blogs, writing newsletters, coaching clients, board responsibilities, all the while creating new and exciting projects. You can’t overemphasize the importance of time and energy management when you’re trying to run your own business or simply be productive. You should learn the value of blocking time in your day, activity batching and scripting. Stretching sends vital oxygen to your brain and energizes your cells. Try it, it really works!
6) Notify your family and friends about your schedule changes. This is difficult for them to accept. Most people don’t believe you can make money from home, but oh are they dead wrong. By responding to their every request, you’re giving them permission to devalue what you’re doing. Even worse, you’re not getting the results you hoped for, and we all know how frustrating, struggling, and unproductive that can be.
7) I strongly recommend going to bed early. “Cool and hip” New York Times bestselling author and celebrity Neil Strauss admits that the early morning schedule allowed him to get more done. You’ll find that 30 minutes of morning productivity gets you “2 hours of afternoon work.” Again, I’m sure success depends on the idea of working myself to the core. Yes, it’s about what you become. Pulp!

Whether working from home for you means lounging at your local Starbucks with laptop and coffee in hand or mentally rambling on about things to do at home, you’re not going to create the life you hope for. Sorry to say it won’t.
Here’s how to do more. duration
You should be serious about a simple plan and time management checklist.
The last thing you should do every working day is prepare a schedule/checklist for the next day’s work. Develop a template based on your current projects and literally block time for each task.
To “create” this schedule, you’ll need to use a journal to record how you’re spending your time right now. “Want to track my time?” Remember my opening story called Carry a notebook with you for a couple of days and write down exactly what you are doing every 15 minutes. Do this throughout the day for three straight working days. Then you will identify the things that cause you to waste time and you can work on eliminating them.
You may notice patterns of falling into the trap of checking emails that lead you to far-flung places like sports sites, fashion newsletters, Twitter, etc. You’ll see where it’s going, and so will your timing. That’s why having your schedule is so important. It brings you back to where you need to be.
Lastly, identify the time of day when you are most productive. What I find is that it can interfere with another family function. This is where the support of family and friends is so important to fill in those time slots so you can identify the task. Otherwise, success will elude you for a long time until you apply these time-tested principles.
