My Favorite Top 10 Comedy TV Shows

Well, being a child of the 50s and 60s, I can definitely say that I have been watching, absorbing and enjoying comedy TV shows since their inception. I can say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that I am heavily influenced by them and that they are partially responsible for me being an entertainer for the rest of my life. That being said, narrowing down my list would be impossible so I’ll go through many of the shows I liked, starting with the 50s, work my way up to the present, and then somehow try to put together my top 10 list.

Let’s have fun It was a Sunday morning show for kids with Chuck McCann and Chuck was a talented versatile performer. The show was always entertaining and very funny.

The Ernie Kovacs Show It was a very funny and wonderful show. The things he did editing-wise were beyond 50’s technology and Ernie was a comedic genius. He was taken from us far too early in a car accident. Who knows what he would have achieved if he had lived longer in a medium that was still in its embryonic stage.

Sid Caesars, your show of shows It was a classic show whose form has been imitated ever since. The cast of writers is literally a Who’s Who in the comedy world: Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Woody Allen, Larry Gelbart and Neil Simon to name a few. How could such a show not be good, not to mention Sid Caesar himself. A genius in dialects, he was a great achiever.

The Jack Benny Show It was a great show with a great cast. Benny was a master of the ‘face’ and no one could smile more at the camera than him. Unique to the show was that the laughs were mostly based on the ‘second banana’ that fueled the show’s comedy.

Amos ‘n’ Andy It was a great show with such an array of characters. The kingfish always tricked Andy somehow, which was great to watch unfold. Amos was the cab driver who narrated the show and accompanied Sapphire, Lightning and of course, Algonquin J. Calhoun was there. Unfortunately, the show was eventually pulled due to pressure from the NAACP, which wanted to show Black Americans in a better light. It’s a shame because the chemistry between Kingfish and Andy is priceless to watch.

The Red Skelton Show A fun show of skits and characters, Red performs with an infectious laugh and is one of the first shows to have a weekly guest performing in skits. Mr. He always ended programs with “Good night and may God bless”. Come back, Red.

The Original Tonight Show with Steve Allen One of my favorite shows of all time. Steve created the talk show format as we know it today and had a cast of unforgettable characters that were used in many ways. Steve was a man of many talents with a terrific smile. I had the chance to meet him once in Las Vegas at a comedy convention and he was just as funny and gracious as I thought he would be.

The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson It was a show of sorts with a lot of impact. If you appeared on that show, your career was in tact and doors would open and your phone would ring. You can tell Johnny was heavily influenced by his idol, Jack Benny, by the way he makes faces at the camera and the crowd erupts in laughter. I had the honor of appearing on the show and I can say that no other talk show has ever come close to its popularity. I think it’s the chemistry between Johnny and Ed McMahon and interviewing guests on a show is an art form in itself and I believe Johnny is definitely a master at it. He knew how to make moments!

Honeymooners One of the most watched syndicated shows of all time. I don’t think there’s anyone who knows anything about comedy, who wouldn’t be impressed by this show. Many popular scenes from the series can be quoted word for word by many people. Along with the greatness of Ralph and Ed on the show, you have Audrey Meadows as Alice. She was simply outstanding and I don’t think the show would have worked without her. In fact, when he did a show with some other people in later years, it wasn’t funny. She had the best deadpan face and, to paraphrase Ralph, “Alice, you’re great!”

The Dick Van Dyke Show Another great ensemble performance, as well The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Both had fantastic cast members and strong storylines that fueled their popularity over the years. Neither show had a weak character in their cast. Everyone was equally funny and brilliant.

Monty Python’s Flying Circus The 60s were a fantastic show for anyone going through their teenage years. It was very different from anything else on American television back then, and they were like the Beatles of comedy in a way. It was a joke for the boomer generation. He was also responsible for opening the door to English comedy on American TV. Of course, it was on PBS then, which made it even more underground during the psychedelic era.

Mash It was a spectacular show during the Korean War and this country’s Vietnam War. And it had to surpass the popularity of the movie, which was no easy task. And Be funny. It also had to survive cast changes throughout the series. It did all that and more.

Saturday Night Live Amazing in its survival. It has had many great seasons and bad ones but one thing has always been constant: a barrage of talented performers who are very important in the comedy mainstream. You have to give Lorne Michaels credit for having such an accurate comedic eye for talent. What a track record!

Whose line is it anyway? One of my absolute favorites of late. I love improvised comedy and these guys are great at it. The chemistry between Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochary is a blast and Wayne Brody is phenomenal with the musical comedy. Add in guests Brad Sherwood, Chip and Greg Proops and the show is a no-holes extravaganza.

The Cosby Show A great family show was when families were out of fashion on TV. All other shows are about dysfunctional families and situations but Cosby’s show is about love for each other and the warmth you can see when you are busy laughing.

The Carol Burnett Show Was one of my favorites. It’s worth the time to watch Harvey Corman, Tim Conway, Carol, Lyle Wagoner and Vicki Lawrence break up during skits. I loved watching Tim do his best to make Harvey laugh and lose, it was almost inevitable.

Seinfeld Another character driven show that I contribute to the genius of Larry David is well crafted and produced. Larry is one of the most prolific writers I have ever met and his talent for bringing in different storylines and somehow weaving them together in the end is amazing to watch. He does the same thing ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Today. I used to work with Larry in improv in NYC during the 80’s and he alone had a whole new 20 minute set every week….and an amazing 20 minute set at that. It’s impossible to do unless you write consistently all the time like he does. The only person I’ve seen like that is Steve Allen.

The Abbott and Costello Show A great show for any age group. The chemistry between the two and the artistry around them is a treat to watch. Abbott was a great straight man and controlled the whole tempo of comedy and don’t forget Sidney Fields, Boccagalupe, Mike the Cop, Hilary Brooks and Stinky.

Frasier One of the best scripted comedy shows of the present time. Even though it’s a spin off of Cheers, I think Frasier is very good and having Niles, David Hyde Pierce on the show is a casting coup. Watching the two of them try to ‘out snob’ each other was so funny and so brilliantly acted.

My honorable mentions are Fawlty Towers, The Simpsons, The Tracey Ullman Show, The Dean Martin Show & The Dean Martin Roasts, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends, Sanford & Son, The Burns and Allen Show, The Danny Kaye Show, Make Room for Daddy, The Andy Griffith Show, Boston Legal, Married with Children, Andy’s Gang, The Soupy Sales Show, Laugh-In, The Addams Family, The Munsters, The Colgate Comedy Hour, I Love Lucy, The Phil Silvers Show, Living Color, Fridays, Will & Grace, All in the Family, Mork and Mindy, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Two and a Half Men, The Bob Newhart Show and Taxi.

So after serious thought he:

I’ve already played with this list several times and no matter how much I change it, I’m not happy with it because I always seem to include something definitely off the list. I really should have made it a top 20 list or even better, a top 50 list. But that’s my problem, not yours. As always, thanks for reading Comedy Whirlwind!!
